Golf in Mauritius: The Complete Course Guide

Mauritius has some of the finest golf courses in the Indian Ocean. Turquoise lagoons on one side, black volcanic mountains on the other. And 12 months of sunshine to play in.

The Complete Mauritius Golf Guide

Mauritius has ten championship golf courses. For an island you can drive around in a day, that is an extraordinary amount of golf. Every one of them sits within sight or sound of the Indian Ocean. You can play a Bernhard Langer course on a private island reachable only by boat, then finish your trip on the region's number one ranked links course. Or you can just take one lesson at a golf academy and spend the rest of your holiday on the beach while your other half plays 18 holes. I have been arranging Mauritius holidays for 26 years, and golf is one of the questions I get asked about most. Which course should you play? Where should you stay to get the best access? Is it worth bringing your own clubs? This guide answers all of it, course by course.

Dress code on Mauritius golf courses. Every course on the island runs a similar golfing dress code, so it is worth knowing before you pack. Soft spikes only, collared shirts (polo), and tailored trousers, shorts or skirts with socks. No jeans, no swimwear, and no plain t-shirts. Most clubs will turn you away at the pro shop if you turn up in the wrong kit, so if you are borrowing gear or buying it on arrival, factor in a bit of time before your tee time.

La Réserve Golf Links

The newest course in Mauritius, and already the best. La Réserve is the Indian Ocean's first and only contemporary links course, co-designed by 2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, and in 2025 it was officially named Mauritius' number one golf course by Top 100 Golf Courses, the independent global authority on course rankings. It was also placed 28th in Golfweek's Best Top 100 International Courses outside the United States for 2026.

Why golfers love it
This is the course for anyone who has played links golf in Scotland and missed it ever since, except with 300 days of sunshine a year. Elevated infinity greens, rolling dunes planted with native grasses on former sugar cane land, and ocean views from every single hole. The par 4, 8th, with its split fairway and waste area, is the hole everyone talks about afterwards. Louis Oosthuizen himself won the course's debut tournament, the 2023 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, on the very first professional round ever played on it.

Ile aux Cerfs Golf Course

You reach this course by boat, and that is half the reason people fall in love with it. Bernhard Langer designed the course across 38 hectares of a private island off the east coast, and every single hole has a sea view. It is one of the most photographed courses in the world, and once you have played it, you will understand why.

Why golfers love it
There is nowhere else in Mauritius, or arguably anywhere, quite like it. You take a boat shuttle to get to the course. Volcanic rock outcrops, mangroves and lagoon views run through the whole round, and the 18th hole finishes with two separate greens depending on which tee you played from. Colin Montgomerie has called it a "must play."

Le Château Golf Course

The original course at Heritage Golf Club, and for two decades the benchmark for golf in the Indian Ocean. It has hosted the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour, more times than any other course on the island.

Why golfers love it
Le Château has hosted multiple editions of the DP World Tour's AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, and the course plays every bit like it. Two rivers cross the fairways, volcanic rock outcrops sit in play, and the 9th hole earned its own piece of history in 2015 when Spain's Javier Colomo made a hole in one on it, the first ever par 4 ace across the Sunshine, European and Asian Tours.

Anahita Golf Course

The only course on the island built to USGA standard, and it plays like it. Ernie Els gave it wide, generous fairways, but do not let that fool you. Six ocean front holes and a run home along the lagoon make the closing stretch one of the best finishes in golf.

Why golfers love it
Holes 16, 17 and 18 run right along the lagoon, and the 18th, a par 5 doglegging toward the water with the clubhouse watching over the green, is genuinely one of the most spectacular finishing holes anywhere. It is built for holidaymakers, but it does not play easy.

The Legend Golf Course

The first true championship course built in Mauritius, and still one of the best. Hugh Baiocchi laid it out through what used to be a deer hunting forest, so do not be surprised if you spot Java deer between shots.

• Length: 6,018m
• Par: 72
• Designed by: Hugh Baiocchi
• Established: 1994

Why golfers love it
Narrow, tree lined fairways and a serious amount of water in play make this a course that rewards patience over power. It has hosted the MCB Tour Championship, the final event of the European Senior Tour, and it still plays like a true championship test.

The Links Golf Course

Constance Belle Mare Plage's second course, and the friendlier sibling of the two. Rodney Wright and Peter Allis gave it wider fairways and a more relaxed feel, without losing any of the coastal scenery.

• Length: 5,942m
• Par: 71

Why golfers love it
It is more forgiving off the tee than the Legend, which makes it popular with mixed ability groups. There is less water and more room to breathe, but the greens are still fast enough to keep you honest, and the coastal views are every bit as good.

Mont Choisy Golf Course

The only championship course in the north of the island, built across a former sugar cane plantation near Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches. It has hosted the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open twice, in 2022 and 2024.

Why golfers love it
Volcanic black sand, palm lined fairways and a genuinely different character to any other course on the island. The front nine can turn feisty with wind off the coast, while the back nine is tighter and more sheltered. It is the course that put northern Mauritius on the golfing map.

Paradis Golf Course

Set on the Le Morne Peninsula with the UNESCO listed Le Morne Brabant mountain on one side and the lagoon on the other. Five holes run right along the water, and the whole course has a real sense of theatre to it.

Green fee
Preferential fees and tee times for guests staying at Trou aux Biches Beachcomber, Paradis Beachcomber, Dinarobin Beachcomber & Canonnier Beachcomber.
Why golfers love it
It is the most laid back of the ten courses, in the best possible way. You tee off close enough to the beach to hear the waves, the mountain backdrop never gets old, and the 16th, with a lagoon on one side and a lake on the other, is a real test even for confident players. It is also the most accessible course on the island for guests staying nearby.

Tamarina Golf Course

The longest course in Mauritius, set in the dry, breezy west near Tamarin Bay. Rodney Wright routed it through rugged savannah rather than tropical forest, giving it a wilder, more open character than most of the island's courses.

Tamaraina Golf Course
• Location: Tamarin Bay
• Length: 6,886m
• Par: 72
• Designed by: Rodney Wright
• Established: 2006

Green fee
Complimentary daily green fee for guests of: Sugar Beach and La Pirogue.
Why golfers love it
The Rempart Mountain backdrop and views over Tamarin Bay from the 7th hole are reason enough, but golfers particularly rate Tamarina for its west coast microclimate, the island's lowest average rainfall.

Avalon Golf Estate

The only inland course in Mauritius, set up in the hills above Bois Chéri among tea plantations rather than the coast. The elevation gives it a noticeably cooler, breezier feel than the other nine courses, and the views stretch out to the south coast and the Indian Ocean in the distance.

Avalon Golf Estate
• Location: Bois Chéri
• Length: 6,318m
• Par: 72
• Designed by: Peter Matkovich
• Established: 2015
Facilities
Practice green ✓ (2 putting greens) · Driving range ✓ · Practice bunker ✓ · Club hire ✓ · Left and right-handed clubs available · Pro shop ✓ · Golf carts available ✓ (GPS fitted) · Training academy ✓ · Swing analysis · Lockers and showers ✓ (self-service locker room) · Clubhouse ✓
Green fee
Complimentary daily green fee for guests of: Shanti Maurice. Preferential rates and tee times for guests staying at Shandrani Beachcomber.
Why golfers love it
Wide, forgiving fairways make it a genuinely relaxing round, right up until the par 4 4th, the course's signature hole, where a river cuts across the fairway from an elevated tee. The panoramic views over Grand Bassin and the south coast are some of the best on the island, and because it sits away from the main resort belt, it rarely feels crowded.

Our Picks

For serious golfers:
La Réserve Golf Links
, Bel Ombre is where I send anyone who takes their golf seriously. It is officially ranked the number one course in Mauritius by Top 100 Golf Courses, and once you have played a links course with infinity greens and ocean views from every hole, everything else feels a little bit tame by comparison.
Ile aux Cerfs, for the sheer theatre of playing a Bernhard Langer course on a private island, is not far behind. You do not forget that boat ride to the first tee.
Le Château Golf Course, also in Bel Ombre, deserves a mention too. It has hosted more DP World Tour events than any other course on the island, and it plays with all the character you would expect from a course with that pedigree.

For casual golfers:
Paradis Golf Course is my pick if you want spectacular golf without the intensity. Ocean front holes, the Le Morne mountain backdrop, and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere from the moment you arrive.
Avalon Golf Estate is the other course I recommend for a gentler round. The layout is forgiving, the views over the south coast are panoramic, and because it is set inland away from the main resorts, you rarely feel rushed.
