Top 10 Things to Do in Mauritius — My Favourite Experiences

Mauritius is one of those rare destinations that truly has it all — postcard-perfect beaches, mountain views, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality that stays with you long after you leave. Having explored the island extensively, I’ve gathered my personal top 10 things to do in Mauritius — experiences that capture its heart, beauty, and laid-back island soul.

1. Relax on Mauritius’s Incredible Beaches

When people ask me what to do in Mauritius, the first thing that comes to mind is simple: relax on the beach. The island’s coastline is spectacular. Trou aux Biches offers calm turquoise water perfect for swimming, while Flic en Flac is a powder soft beach with unbelievable sunsets. Down south, Le Morne Beach sits beneath its iconic mountain backdrop — a favourite of mine for sunset swims. On the east coast, Belle Mare Beach stretches for miles, ideal for peaceful morning walks.

2. Dive into Water Sports and Lagoon Adventures

Thanks to its surrounding coral reef, Mauritius boasts tranquil lagoons ideal for all kinds of water sports. Whether you’re snorkelling, scuba diving, or windsurfing, the ocean here feels like your playground. Most resorts include some complimentary non-motorised water activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, so there’s always something to do, even if you’re just floating in paradise.

3. Explore Port Louis and Its Local Markets

A visit to Port Louis, Mauritius’s bustling capital, is a must. I love wandering through the Central Market, where you can shop for tropical fruits, spices, and handmade crafts while soaking up local energy. Grab some street food here, Dhal Puri and Gateaux Piments are my favourite. Don’t miss the Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that tells the story of Mauritius’s diverse cultural roots. It’s a city full of history, colour, and authenticity.

4. Tee Off on World-Class Golf Courses

If you’re a golfer, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Mauritius is home to some of the best golf courses in the Indian Ocean. Some of the best include Ile aux Cerfs Golf Course, an island course with ocean views from nearly every hole; The Legend Course at Belle Mare; and La Réserve Golf Links at Bel Ombre, which is as beautiful as it is challenging.

5. Discover Mauritius’s Smaller Islands

Some of the most memorable things to do in Mauritius happen off the main island. Take a speedboat to Ile aux Cerfs, famous for its soft sands and beachside dining. Visit Ile aux Aigrettes to see protected wildlife like the Pink Pigeon and learn about Mauritius’s conservation efforts. Or spend a day on Flat Island in the north, untouched, wild, and absolutely stunning.

6. Chase Mauritius’s Majestic Waterfalls

The island’s interior hides some of its greatest treasures, waterfalls. The dramatic Chamarel Falls is one of the most photographed sites in Mauritius, while Tamarind Falls offers multiple cascades surrounded by lush tropical forest. Exploring these natural wonders reminds me just how diverse Mauritius really is, there’s beauty far beyond the beaches.

7. Taste the Island Spirit — Rum Tasting

For a true taste of Mauritius, head to one of its rum distilleries. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is my top pick, offering guided tastings amid sugarcane fields and mountain views. Other favourites include St Aubin and New Grove, each crafting unique blends of aged and spiced rums. It’s a smooth, flavourful glimpse into island life.

8. Experience the Buzz of Grand Baie

Up north, Grand Baie is the island’s lively heart. By day, browse local boutiques and the Grand Baie Bazaar for handmade souvenirs. By night, the area transforms into a hub for nightlife and dining, with beachfront bars, live music, and fine seafood restaurants. It’s the perfect blend of Mauritian culture and cosmopolitan charm.

9. Feel the Energy at Champ de Mars

For something completely different, head to Champ de Mars, the oldest horse-racing track in the southern hemisphere. Races run between April and November, and it’s a vibrant spectacle, colourful hats, cheering crowds, and mountain views in every direction. Even if you don’t place a bet, it’s a fun way to experience local life.

10. Lunch at a Colonial House

To step back in time, book lunch at one of Mauritius’s beautiful colonial estates. My favourites include St Aubin, La Demeure Saint Antoine, Château de Labourdonnais, and Eureka. Each offers a unique blend of Creole cuisine, history, and charm. It’s a slow, elegant way to savour both Mauritian food and heritage.

From tranquil beaches and coral lagoons to rum tastings, waterfalls, and colonial houses, there are endless things to do in Mauritius that capture the island’s heart and soul. Whether you come for adventure, relaxation, or culture, one thing’s certain: you’ll leave already dreaming of your return.
